Frequently Asked Questions

If you don’t see your question listed below, please click on the “Ask a Tree Question” button on the bottom of the page and you can ask us directly. We’ve heard just about every question there is, so don’t be shy! We’ll try to answer it as soon as we are able.

Do you plant or transplant trees?

We occasionally plant trees that fit into a two-gallon pot or smaller. For larger tree installation, we recommend the following landscapers:

For tree transplanting, we recommend:
  • Ace of Spades 406-212-1963

*Please know that transplanting is usually only done in spring and fall, during dormancy, when survival rate is highest.

Do you grind stumps?

No, we do not currently grind stumps. We will happily refer you to a reputable local stump grinding service, upon request.

Do you apply pesticides or herbicides?

We do not currently apply pesticides or herbicides. We specialize in detailed pruning of diseased trees in order to organically remove the diseased sections. We recommend the following pesticide applicators:

  • Turfmaster Lawn & Tree Care: 406-755-4445
  • Expert Tree Care: 406-257-0025
  • Okamoto Arbor Care: 406-756-1890

If your tree is structurally sound but seems to still be in decline, or if there are obviously bugs on or in it, please call a licensed applicator!

How much do you charge?

This is a common question and difficult to answer outright, as every tree and job are unique. We use a calculated pricing system to ensure we’re charging a competitive price, one that’s right for us and for you. We are willing to work with peoples’ budgets, especially for emergency work after storms.

Our pricing is based on:

  • Job type (removal, pruning, cabling)
  • Overall tree size (diameter, height, spread, volume)
  • Felling risk (to property and person)
  • Technical expertise and equipment required (climbing, ropes & rigging)
  • Distance to jobsite (from Kalispell)
  • Access to tree(s)
  • Amount of woody material to be removed from the jobsite

Often the most labor intensive and time-consuming aspect of the job is the final point, which is wood hauling. Our rates are flexible depending on how much wood remains on site.

Standard pricing for fruit trees is $70/hr per arborist, and $8/inch for stump grinding.

We offer free quotes! If you’re looking to get an idea of what something will cost so you can budget it in, please let us know and we’ll give a you an idea.

What is an Arborist?

The job title “Arborist” is finally coming more into vogue in the last ten years. Before that, we tree surgeons were given the title of “tree man” (or woman). The field of arboriculture and urban forestry continue to grow and evolve, and are now in the forefront of the fight against climate change. We all need trees to survive, now more than ever.

The benchmarking organization that certifies arborists is the ISA, or International Society of Arboriculture. Their succinct description of what an arborist is and why you should hire one is available here.

Both Rob and Devin are certified through the ISA, and their qualifications can be verified through the “Verify a Credential” page on their website.

Who will work on my property?

Up Tree Care currently employs its two owners, Rob and Devin. They are the arborists who will work on your property. If your job is big enough, they may bring on temporary help to get it done.

Are you licensed? What kind of license do you have?

Up Tree Care LLC is a registered business in good standing with the Montana Secretary of State. Rob and Devin both have current ISA Arborist Certifications, the most common and comprehensive benchmark of tree worker knowledge currently available.

Are you insured?

We currently hold liability insurance that covers up to $1 million. You can see our proof of insurance here.

What type of residential clients do you work for?

We do most any job, no matter the size. Our clientele ranges from folks looking to prune shrubs to big tree removals. We serve anyone who has a tree and needs help with it!

Do you provide free estimates?

We provide free estimates for customers in Kalispell and Evergreen. We charge an initial consultation fee for trees outside of a 5-mile radius from Kalispell.

To see our consultation fee rates, please see our service fee map.

Please fill out a form and we’ll schedule a time to come look at your trees.

What type of return can I expect on my investment?

Your trees, if young, will likely outlast you if properly cared for. On a property, they become more valuable over time. They are ultimately the legacy of the landscape and your care for it. Mature, healthy trees provide shade and cover, improve the ecosystem, reduce carbon dioxide and increase the value of the property on which they sit.
